NYC with Jen Volt 1.

The Lower East Side

Some background…. The “L.E.S.” Once home of Jewish Immigrants who settled along Houston, Ludlow, and Orchard Streets in the early 1900’s. Today the “Lower East Side” is the new hotspot. Home to artists, musicians – and Bohemians at heart. You will find a mix of very well merchandised vintage stores and boutiques carrying the latest trends as well as uber chic boutique hotels, apartment buildings, cafes and restaurants.

The look around the LES is very young and trendy…. For gals, boots paired with a Halter dress, denim mini skirt or cut off shorts and halter tops. For the guys, low slung denim jeans in the latest washes paired with a graphic tee along with the latest converse, addidas or vans. The looks are topped off with Big Sunglasses seen on both the guys and the gals.

Let’s shop…….

Orchard Street which is known as “Bargain Street” gained its popularity attracting customers with kiosks set up all along the street with the most wanted items of the times and shop keepers ready to haggle and ‘make a deal’.

Today, the kiosks are replaced with trendy boutiques. Apollo Braun (www.apollobraun.com) is a small and unique boutique, which carries many one of a kind pieces from up and coming and local designers.

Doyle & Doyle (www.doyleanddoyle.com) carries beautiful Vintage and E state Jewelry. Frock, one of my favorite vintage stores, also a favorite of many stylists; all pieces are designer and are kept in pristine state.

Reed Space (www.thereedspace.com) is a cool urban street/ skate lifestyle store/ art gallery which carries the latest allover printed hoody, color blocked knit tops, and hats and accessories for guys and girls.

Ludlow Street is home to the famous Katz’s Deli however you will also find a variety of small vintage and trendy boutiques. “Shop” on Ludlow is a great small boutique filled with the most trendy dresses, denim, shoes and handbags in the most wanted labels for women.

Peggy Pardon (www.peggypardon.com) is a great vintage boutique specializing in 70’s and 80’s apparel and accessories.

Along Stanton Street, you will find Foley & Corinna (www.foleyandcorrina.com), a great boutique with great vintage pieces as well as their own branded dresses, and tops– this shop is also a favorite of NYC stylists.

Making your way over to Rivington Street, you will find A-Life/ Rivington Club (www.alifenyc.com) the stores are side by side but are unmarked so you really need to be on the look out.

Both stores are beautifully decorated with rich custom wood paneling lending itself to a sophisticated air. A-Life carries their own branded apparel, jackets, hoodys, hats and accessories.

Next door at Rivington Club a ‘haute’ sneaker shop with rich wood walls, large chandelier, plush seating, the sneakers are beautifully displayed / merchandised in custom wood and glass enclosed cases.

Also on Rivington is Edith Machinist is where you can feed your fix for vintage slouchy boots, additionally there is a great variety of vintage shoes, handbags, hats and apparel as well as their own branded apparel.

Organic Avenue (www.organicavenue.com) is all “organic” apparel and accessories, food, etc.

Till Next Time…
