ENGLISH DESIGN LABORATORY
Where fashion comes to life . . .
ENGLISH DESIGN LABORATORY (EDL) made its Atlanta debut in August 2004
with an eye towards educating, stimulating and creating a new generation
of fashion designers. Offering a complete fashion experience that
combines classroom practicality with real world interaction, English
Design Laboratory has created a pattern for success that is quickly
making it the leading school of its kind.
EDUCATE: At EDL, girls discover their inner fashion diva in “Fashion
Firsts” and “Fashion FUNdamentals,” two hands-on “FAB-LABS” tailor made
for tweens and teens. The “FAB LABS” cover fashion basics: sketching,
figures & flats, color theory and more, preparing students to take
new-found skills and create their own mini designer lines. EDL also
offers an introductory FREE “FAB LAB” once a month – perfect for the
fashion curious!
STIMULATE: EDL’s annual “Destination:Design” tours provide a unique
opportunity to experience the fashion industry firsthand. In 2005, EDL’s
fashionistas traveled to L.A., and in 2006, they took on New York City.
Summer of 2007 promises to be equally exciting with an itinerary that
includes two of the hottest spots in the fashion world: Paris and
London!
CREATE: Committed to nurturing the creativity of aspiring design
students, EDL sponsors the annual
“A Cut Above” Scholarship, an intense competition for Georgia’s junior
and seniors who plan to major in fashion design.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- In 2006, EDL launched its first “Fashion Tease” T-shirt design
contest and was honored to have two of the country’s hippest
designers, Amy Tan of Amy Tangerine and Michael Hecht of Project e,
preside as judges.
- In 2005, EDL, in conjunction with the Make-A-Wish
Foundation, made fashion dreams come true for two young designers:
Briona and Kristena.
LOOKING BACK/LOOKING FORWARD:
EDL founder Karron English graduated from New York’s Fashion
Institute of Technology (FIT) and spent the next fifteen years
traveling the world (Europe, Hong Kong, India), while working with
The Limited Corporation, as well as other leading companies in the
fashion industry. In 2004, English’s desire to share her knowledge
and expertise resulted in the creation of English Design Laboratory.
Today, she hopes to expand nationally, becoming America’s preeminent
fashion design laboratory for tweens and teens.
